Ben’s professional theatre & event work includes productions for The Royal Exchange (Manchester), Adam Kenwright (West End), Congo Blue Design, Select Model Agency, The Clotheshow Live (NEC, Birmingham), The Lowry, Chester Gateway Theatre, Bolton Octagon, LipService (National Tour) Arcane Dance’s national tour of 59 Seconds and most recently the launch of the new Hilton Hotel in the Beetham Tower - the UK’s tallest residential building!

Ben works as a freelance Lighting Designer & Production Manager within professional Theatre, Events and Education.

The focus of his work with teachers & young people is to enable them to use lighting, sound, set & stage management skills to confidently and competently create effective theatrical ‘moments’ with limited resources. Each workshop is bespoke to fit the needs and interests of the participants. Ben is passionate about developing the skills of the next generation of professional lighting designers!

youth theatre work

Ben has strong connections with Youth Theatres across the North West.  He has production managed and designed lighting for the nationally acclaimed Cheshire Youth Theatre on productions including Beowulf, Frankenstein & Julius Caesar. He has also worked extensively with the education departments at Chester Gateway & Bolton Octagon.

technical manager at performing arts college

Ben worked for 5 years in a part time position as Technical Manager at Poynton High School & Performing Arts College (Cheshire),leading technical workshops with all year 11, 12 & 13 students and guiding specialist technical theatre students through GCSE, AS & A-Level modules.  He oversaw the complete technical refurbishment of the main theatre in to a professional standard touring venue. As a result of this vast experience Ben understands the challenges facing drama teachers in trying to integrate technical theatre in to the curriculum.

international schools theatre association

His work with the International Schools Theatre Association (www.ista.org) has seen him leading technical workshops at theatre festivals in countries including Malaysia, Sri Lanka & Japan. Students from all over the world come together to experience new cultures, share ideas and create some stunning theatre.

creative partnerships

Ben is heavily involved in the groundbreaking ‘Chrysalis’ project run by Integrate Arts Education, part of a Creative Partnerships initiative to teach areas of the curriculum through the performing arts. Over 2007 he will be working with science teachers in a Yorkshire school to develop a program of teaching the curriculum areas of light & electricity through creative stage lighting projects!

cheshire drama advisory service

2007 will mark the forth year that Ben will run ‘key skills’ workshops for the residential drama weekends run by Cheshire County Council’s drama advisory service at the Conway Centre in Anglsea. Yr 10 GCSE drama students from schools across Cheshire attend these residential experiences where they are immersed in theatre & new ideas for a whole weekend.
